Villa bettanini peraga di vigonza

Municipality of vigonza borders

Their name links them to the village of Peraga, now part of the municipality of Vigonza. Here they owned a castle, destroyed in 1319 by Jacopo da Carrara and from which the present villa Bettanini[1] may have evolved.

The family was tragically involved in the events that saw Ezzelino da Romano as the protagonist: according to Rolandino da Padova’s tale, in 1251 the brothers Giovanni and Pietro da Peraga, sons of the above mentioned Geremia, were killed by the “Tyrant” because one of their sisters, Guardionessa or Gardionisia, had married Tiso VI da Camposampiero, his bitter enemy[2].

On this page we publish some photographs dating back to 1918 and taken at villa Bettanini and some short passages of letters taken from the volume “La prima guerra mondiale vista da Antonio Paccanaro – Catalogo della mostra fotografica”, edited by Luciano Biasiolo and Bruno Barizza (Comune di Villanova di Camposampiero, 2002), in which the villa of Peraga is mentioned.

He then tells of hearing the roars of the cannon and the uncontrolled rumors of a new Austrian offensive in the Vicenza valley. From his letters we also learn some news about a military tribunal housed in the same villa/castle of Peraga: we will discuss this in a future article.

San vito of vigonza

The toponym Vigoncia is found for the first time in a notarial act that attests to a conspicuous matrimonial gift, the Cartula De Morgincap gift of the first morning of marriage of the Longobard Giovanni del fu Martino di Piove di Sacco immediately after the marriage in November 999, to the beloved and beloved Giustina, daughter of Berengerio, inhabitant in loco Vigoncia. Different are the opinions the interpretations on the origin of the name. The toponomastic Davide Olivieri sustains that it is possible to recognize in the word Vigonza the name of a Germanic person Gunzo and in this case the name Vigonza could mean Gunzo’s village. Another possible origin of the name could be linked to the geographical position of the town, which is located at a fork in the road: those who came from Padua to Vigonza met a fork in the road, one road led to Venice, the other to Treviso. The name derives from Biguncia, that is bifurcation.
